Pitru Paksha 2025: Significance, Rituals & Key Dates
In Hindu tradition, Pitru Paksha is a sacred period dedicated to honoring ancestors. It is believed that performing Shraddha (rituals for departed souls) during this time helps ancestors attain peace and brings blessings of prosperity and happiness to their descendants.

Why Pitru Paksha is Important?
According to scriptures, one must please their ancestors before worshipping the gods. Hindu astrology also considers Pitru Dosha (ancestral affliction) as one of the most serious defects in a horoscope. Shraddha rituals performed during Pitru Paksha are said to remove this dosha and ensure family well-being.
During this fortnight, it is believed that Lord Yama allows ancestors to visit their descendants. When honored with rituals, they bless the family with health, prosperity, long life, and continuity of lineage.
What is Shraddha?
The Brahma Purana defines Shraddha as any offering made with devotion in the name of ancestors at the right time and place. The most important part of the ritual is Pinda Daan (offering of rice balls), which symbolizes food for the departed souls. Families also perform Tarpan (water offerings), and give food, clothes, and donations to Brahmins.
